Battle of the Bulge Tours

Follow in the footsteps of the American and British Forces as they face the German onslaught in The Ardennes between 16 December 1944 and 25 January 1945 in Adolf Hitler’s “Last throw of the dice”.

Battle of the Bulge Tours

The best way to explore the Battle of the Bulge Battlefields

Your expert led In The Footsteps® Battle of the Bulge Tour will visit the major locations along the Northern Shoulder where Kampfgruppe Pieper attempted to breakthrough, those in the centre where Manteuffel’s Fifth Panzer Army advanced and was ultimately pushed back, and those around Bastogne looking at the defence of this vital road hub and its relief by Patton’s Third Army.

Our battlefield historian will recount the stories of the Americans who stood in the way of the German advance and the American and British soldiers who were rushed to plug the line and push back ‘The Bulge’ on the ground over which these battles were fought.

Day 1: Outward journey

Our In The Footsteps® Four-Day Tour of the Battle of the Bulge begins when we collect you from the Dover Ferry Terminal at 10:00 hrs and cross the English Channel.

On arrival in Calais, we head into Belgium and drive to Bastogne. On arrival in Bastogne, we check into our tour hotel.

Time permitting, we head to Place McAuliffe where your battlefield historian will introduce you to the Battle of the Bulge.

Overnight in Bastogne.

Day 2: The offensive begins

Day two begins when we leave the reception of our hotel at 09:00 hrs to begin exploring the battlefields.
After breakfast, you are collected from the hotel reception at 09:00. Today you follow in the footsteps of the German Sixth Panzer Army’s spearhead in their drive across the Northern Shoulder. This will include visiting:

  • The Dragon’s Teeth on the German-Belgium border at Hollerath, where you will not only see the Dragon’s Teeth of the Siegfried Line but visit the location of the foxholes that were occupied by the German 277th Volksgrenadier Division before the battle.
  • Three locations associated with the US 99th Infantry Division who occupied the Allied line when the German advance began.

We then follow in the footsteps of SS-Obersturmbannführer Joachim Pieper’s Kampfgruppe in their drive across the Northern Shoulder and finish the day at the excellent December 1944 Museum in La Gleize. There you have the opportunity to see one of the few remaining the King Tiger tanks.
Overnight in Bastogne.

Day 3: Stopping the German advance and counterattack

Day three begins when we leave the reception of our hotel at 09:00 hrs to continue exploring the battlefields.

Today is spent exploring the battlefield in the area where General der Panzertruppe von Manteuffel’s Fifth Panzer Army opened a massive gap to envelop the 106th Infantry Division, capture Saint-Vith and almost reach the River Meuse.

We will look at how the Americans threw up roadblocks in places like Parker’s Crossroads, the efforts of the US Armored and Infantry Divisions to push back the Bulge that von Manteuffel’s Fifth Panzer Army had created, and touch on how the British under Field Marshal Montgomery joined the fight.

Overnight in Bastogne.

Day 4: The defence and relief of Bastogne, and the return journey

Day four begins when we check out of our hotel at 09:00 hrs.

In the morning, we discuss the defence of Bastogne by the 10th Armored Division and 101st Airborne Division, and how General George S Pattern Jr’s Third Army came to their relief.
