Paul is a Badged Member of the International Guild of Battlefield Guides. He spent 36 years in the British Army, including operations in Ulster, the Balkans, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and Iraq. He held a wide variety of regimental and staff appointments from the lowest tactical level to the highest headquarters. This background gives him an insight into all matters military from the political direction of operations down to the slit trench.
Paul was born in Sheffield and educated at Victoria College in Jersey, where he became interested in the numerous German fortifications on the island. Being of the post-war generation he had many relatives with military experience in both world wars, which combined with the war films of the 1940-60s provided the initial spark of interest.
He ran his first tour in 1983 on the Somme and has been involved in WW1 and WW2 tours since. Paul is a member of the Western Front Association, Gallipoli Association, Victoria Cross Society and an international Victoria Cross research team.
His first book, 'Sheffield City Battalion', was published in 1988 in the 'Pals' series. 2012 will see the publication of two books in the Pen & Sword Battleground Europe series — 'Bruneval Raid' and 'Cockleshell Raid'. Paul is an adviser and contributor to three Battleground Europe documentary DVDs on the Bruneval Raid, the Cockleshell Raid and the Raid on St Nazaire to be released during 2012-13.
Retirement from the Army gives Paul more time to devote to battlefield studies and researching new battles. He is happy to conduct tours by vehicle, by bicycle or on foot.
