Ian Mitchell

Ian was born and brought up in Yorkshire. During a varied career Ian has worked as a civil servant before serving in both the Royal Navy and the British Army as an officer for 16 years. He then began a 3rd career working in training on major defence projects.

His interest in battlefield guiding was first awakened while serving in Germany as part of 7th Armoured Brigade in 1989. He took part in a battlefield tour in the Ardennes about Kampfgruppe Peiper led by the now famous battlefield guide and author Major General Mike Reynolds.

His primary area of interest and experience is the Second World War and the operations of the American, British and Canadian Armies in North West Europe. If ever invited, Ian’s specialist subject for the TV programme Mastermind would be the operations of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions in World War 2.

Ian has been active within the Guild of Battlefield Guides (GBG) since he joined in 2008. Over the last 5 years has also planned and led annual GBG events which are designed to develop the ability of his fellow guides to lead clients on battlefield tours in Normandy and the Ardennes.

He lives in Wiltshire and is currently working on a long overdue book about the operations of 78th Battleaxe Division in Tunisia in April 1943.
