In the footsteps BATTLEFIELD TOURS

The Waterloo Tour

Waterloo Campaign 1815

A three-day/two-night tour of the battlefields of the Waterloo Campaign. Our tour begins by examining Napoleon Bonaparte's last great victory on 16th June 1815 at Ligny over Field Marshal Blücher's Prussians. It continues with the Battle at Quatre Bras between Marshal Ney and the Anglo-Dutch before culminating in a study of Napoleon's ultimate defeat at the hands of the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo.

Day One

We start our tour at the Dover Ferry Terminal in the morning and cross the English Channel. Drive from Calais to Charleroi to approach the battlefields from the direction taken by the Emperor Napoleon.

Our first location is the mill in Fleurus where Napoleon set up his headquarters on 16th June 1815. Here we discuss the prelude to the Waterloo Campaign before moving to the battlefield view point on the edge of the village to discuss the initial phases of the battle and the dispositions of the opposing forces across the battlefield.

From Fleurus we drive to Saint-Amand where we discuss the battle to the west of Ligny before continuing into Ligny to stop at La Ferme d’En Haut . Here we discuss the battle in the centre and the attack of the Imperial Guard before moving through Ligny to stop at Bussy Windmill near Brye. This was where Field Marshal Blücher set up his headquarters on arrival at the battlefield and where we discuss the finale and Napoleon’s lost chance.

From the Ligny battlefield we drive to the crossroads at Quatre Bras and park at the monument dedicated to the Duke of Brunswick. Here we discuss the events that took place on 16th June 1815 when Marshal Ney’s French were held by the Prince of Orange’s Anglo-Dutch forces.

Day Two

Our tour of Waterloo begins at the Visitor’s Centre, Panorama and Wax Museum. Here we also climb the Lion Mount to get a bird’s eye view of the battlefield. After visiting these attractions we drive to Hougoumont stopping off at the Mercer memorial enroute.

After discussing the battle at Hougoumont we return to the Visitor’s Centre to take lunch at Le Crambornne tavern.

Our afternoon is spent exploring the central area of the battlefield, its important locations, memorials and monuments. Here we discuss the main battle and the arrival of the Prussians at Plancenoit.

Day Three

We visit to the excellent Wellington Museum at Waterloo before heading back to Calais.

On our return to Calais we offer you the opportunity to call in at one of the many wine warehouses to top up on your supplies before entering the ferry port to catch our return ferry to Dover.
