The Somme Tour

Battle of the Somme 1916

A three-day/two-night tour of the Somme battlefields of the First World War. Our tour begins with a visit to the Newfoundland Park at Beaumont Hamel then follows a route south visiting the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, Ulster Tower, Pozières and Lochnagar Crater before culminating with the battle at Mametz Wood.

Day One

We start our tour at Dover Ferry Terminal and board our ferry to cross the English Channel. Drive from Calais to Albert where we book into our tour hotel.

After lunch we begin with a visit to the Somme 1916 Museum before driving out to the battlefield at La Boisselle. Here we discuss the actions of the first day in the vicinity before visiting the Lochnagar Crater.

Day Two

We begin with a visit to the Newfoundland Park at Beaumont Hamel where we take the guided tour conducted by the resident Canadian student guides. Following the tour we explore the park its memorials and cemeteries.

From Beaumont Hamel we drive to the Ulster Tower near Thiepval where we discuss the actions of the 36th (Ulster) Division on 1st July 1916.

From the Ulster Tower we move to the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing to pay our respects before dropping down into Pozières where we take lunch at the Le Tommy Café.

Following lunch we explore the Pozières vicinity taking in the Gibraltar Blockhouse, 1st Australian Division Memorial, Pozières Windmill site, the Tank Corps Memorial and the Mouquet Farm site. Here we discuss the actions of the British and Commonwealth forces in the capture of the village and Pozières Ridge.

We drive from Pozières to Peronne to visit the Grande Guerre Museum before taking dinner in one of the nearby restaurants.

Day Three

We begin at the village of Mametz where we discuss the actions of the 9th Devons and 2nd Gordon Highlanders on 1st July 1916.

From the village we move to Mametz Wood to discuss the epic struggle of the 38th (Welsh) Division as they tried to wrestle its possession from the Prussian Guard.

From Mametz Wood we drive to Longueval and Delville Wood where we discuss the actions of the South African Brigade before visiting the museum and South African Memorial. Our visit to Delville Wood concludes our tour of the Somme and we make our way back to Calais.

On our return to Calais we offer you the opportunity to call in at one of the many wine warehouses to top up on your supplies before entering the ferry port to catch our return ferry to Dover.
