The Beaches of Normandy Tour

D-Day, 6th June 1944

A three-night/three-day tour of the beaches of Normandy where the Allied 21st Army Group landed to begin the liberation of Northwest Europe from under the yoke of Hitler's Nazi Germany on D-Day, 6 June 1944. Our tour begins on the Cotentin Peninsula with the US Airborne and UTAH Beach, moves on to cover "bloody" OMAHA and the Mulberry Harbour and culminates with the British at GOLD Beach and a visit to Pegasus Bridge.

Day One

We start our tour at Portsmouth Ferry Terminal in the evening when we board our ferry to cross the English Channel overnight.

Day Two

After breakfast onboard we disembark at Ouistreham and drive to Sainte-Mère-Église. Here we visit the American Airborne Museum and the sites associated with the US 82nd 'All American' Airborne Division in the vicinity.

From Sainte-Mère-Église we head towards UTAH Beach visiting some of the sites associated with the US 101st 'Screaming Eagles' Airborne Division on the way.

At UTAH Beach we have lunch at the Cafe Roosevelt before visiting the excellent Musée du Débarquement UTAH and the surrounding memorials.

Following UTAH Beach we return to the US 101st 'Screaming Eagles' and explore their actions along the road to Carentan before driving to La Cambe German Cemetery for the first of our three cemetery visits. Book into our tour hotel in Bayeux and have dinner in the city that night.

Day Three

Begins with a visit to the spot where 1st Lt Jammie Monteith won the Congressional Medal of Honor. Here we get an introduction to the events of OMAHA Beach before moving to Pointe du Hoc.

Following Pointe du Hoc we head back to OMAHA Beach to Vierville-sur-Mer, Les Moulins and La Ruquet where we discuss the landings at OMAHA in more detail.

We stop for lunch on the seafront at Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer before visiting the excellent OMAHA 6 Juin 1944 Museum then drive to the Normandy American Cemetery and Monument at Colleville-sur-Mer. After time in the cemetery to reflect we walk down to the beach to the site of the US 1st Division memorial before returning to our hotel.

Day Four

Begins with a short drive back to the coast to visit the German Artillery Battery at Longues-sur-Mer. From Longues-sur-Mer we head into Arromanches, the site of the British Mulberry Harbour.

We take lunch at Arromanches before heading to Ver-sur-Mer where we follow the story of CSM Stanley Hollis the only man to win the Victoria Cross on D-Day. Following this we drive to Bénouville and Pegasus Bridge.

At Pegasus Bridge we discuss the first fifteen minutes of the invasion when Major John Howard's D Company, 2nd Battalion, The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry captured the bridges in a coup-du-main operation. Our tour concludes with afternoon tea at the Cafe Gondree the first house to be liberated and very much a living museum and tribute to the British Airborne Forces.

On our return to Ouistreham we offer you the opportunity to call in at one of the wine warehouses to top up on your supplies before entering the ferry port to catch our return ferry to Portsmouth.
